AMAZON’S LUNA CLOUD GAMING SERVICE: NO NEED FOR A CONSOLE, COMPUTER OR GAMES
The competition from Google Stadia and Xbox Project xCloud comes by surprise, it does so with a cheaper price and the promise of 4K games at 60 frames per second
When we thought that all the contenders were on the playing field, we forgot that a giant like Amazon had not made a move in the world of video games. Well here is your answer and it’s called Amazon Luna .
The truth is that it has been a surprise for everyone since in this world rumors are always cooked with time and it is easy to get an idea of the news before they become official. Well, Luna has been very well kept and comes with some very appetizing ingredients as it has the full support of the giant cloud service of Amazon .
Table Of Content
What is Amazon Luna?
It is a cloud-based game system, here there are no consoles or computers running the Video Games, that will be done in the cloud. All we need is a good connection, a screen, and a remote.
For many it will be enough to know that it is a direct competitor of Google Stadia or Xbox Project xCloud . The main difference is that here the powerful Amazon Web Services servers will be used to transmit at the highest possible quality. Otherwise they are quite similar proposals.
When we talk about any screen, we talk about practically all of them. In Amazon they announced that you can run Luna on a PC, a Mac, an iPhone, an iPad , or through their Fire TV . The Android version is close to being presented, but it has not appeared in this first foray into the market.
Amazon Luna’s Integration with Twitch
The other big difference that Luna proposes is its integration with Twitch , the reference channel for streaming games. And it is that Amazon is aware that people like to see other people play a lot, it is a phenomenon that does not stop growing.
In case you missed it , both Luna and Twitch are Amazon initiatives, so it was easy to see them work in unison. The idea is that Luna is also an ideal place to watch broadcasts , or if we want to make one, it gives us the facility to do so.
Amazon Luna’s requirements
That the servers belong to Amazon is quite a positive thing for the performance of the platform, since they will try to do everything possible to be the reference in this. To begin with, they have promised to reach a 4K resolution at 60 images per second .
What is the problem? Our connection, it is necessary to have a quality one so that everything works as it should. The minimum requirement will be a speed of 10 Mbps . But to be able to play at maximum quality it will be better not to go below 35Mbps.
Wanna play on mobile? Yes, it is a completely possible option, especially if we do it with a WiFi connection. If we want to do it with mobile data, we will have to be more careful since Amazon warns that up to 10 GB per hour can be consumed playing in FullHD resolution.
Luna’s Controller & Alexa ?
Luna has its own controller, the Luna Controller , which does not connect to devices, but directly to the cloud. Amazon says that this reduces latency and allows us a quick jump between devices. Its price is $ 49.99.
The Luna Controller is not mandatory to play, as was the case with Google Stadia, there is support for other controllers, keyboards and mice , we can even make use of the Xbox and PlayStation. In the same way, the Luna command can be done on other compatible platforms.
The most curious thing about this Controller is that it has integrated Alexa , that is, a voice assistant in your hands. With this, the doors are opened to control the system without touching a button, and also to use it beyond video games: ask questions, record reminders, control elements of the house, etc.
+50 Games, Including The New WDL
Let’s go with the important thing, the game catalog. The initial launch in the United States is made with a list of 33 quite striking titles, which cover a significant number of genres (you have the list at the end of the article).
The approach to the service is different from the other streaming game proposals that we have come across: instead of having access to a common game library, such as Game Pass, games channels are offered here .
We will find lots of games that have as a common denominator a developer, producer or the theme of the games. Initially there are two that we can subscribe to:
- Luna + is the entry channel and propose a mix of genres and companies. Among the confirmed titles are well-known names such as Resident Evil 7, Control, GRID, ABZU or Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
- The second channel featured is from Ubisoft , which appears to be teaming up with Amazon on this adventure. The French offer Ultimate Editions and DLCs of games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6 or Immortals Fenyx Rising. We are talking about new games that will be available at launch.
It is possible to cancel channel subscriptions at any time, which is not clear to us if they will let us purchase specific titles separately.
Luna’s Availability and price
Amazon Luna starts in an early access phase , that is, a trial period that for now is only available in the United States by invitation. But its price is already official and it is a demolition: $ 5.99 per month .
We are not clear if that price will change when it becomes a final product, if the specific channels will mean an increase, or if it will go up a lot when I jumped the Atlantic, but there is no doubt that the proposal is very attractive in terms of price. It is considerably lower than Google Stadia or NVIDIA GeForce Now.
